Space Intervention

TASK

Public Space Intervention is a group assignment. We are required to choose a public space and carry out case study of the public space. As a mayor and the council, we will need to construct ideas on how to improve, upgrade, enhance,  revamp the existing layout of our public space given using the understanding of built components elements in built environment during this current COVID-19 Pandemic Crisis.  We are to present our information research and intervention ideas in two A2 size CANVA posters and a SketchUp file.

We started the project by choosing an existing public space as case study from the link given (CASE STUDIES: Great Public Spaces). After discussing among the group, we decided to choose the Hunter's South Point Park, New York, USA. Four of us felt this public space interesting and there are a lot of useful information can be extracted online.

Then, we visit the Hunter's South Point Park virtually using Google Earth and did research for extensive information. After the delegation of work, I was mainly in charge for the Part A case study. We started to study the public space in details, such as the location map, background of the park, site plan, space arrangement, infrastructures and facilities, circulation, human activities, green features as well as the safety measures at the public space. After analyzing and compiling everything, we arranged them properly and organized in the Canva poster.

Meanwhile, we started off with the Part B public space intervention. We are given a Sketch Up file prepared by our lecturer, Miss Reene. From the Sketch Up file, we are required to select a site in the existing township and initiate ideas on how a public space could be intervened in relating to the affected COVID 19 pandemic. We will need to do adjustment to the site to accommodate our intervention ideas. After a good amount of discussion and brainstorming, we came out with ideas of "Techno vs Covid", which related the technology and the pandemic situation to provide a safe public space for people. We are much inspired by the current technology improvements to apply into our new public space.

From the concept, safety measurements, explanation and presentation video, we tried to make everything precise, clear and organized for a better understanding for the viewers, We also tried to figure out the Enscape to render our SketchUp file which provides a realistic view of our public space intervention. Overall, our progress was slightly slower than the others but we managed to complete it on time.

REFLECTION

       By completing this project, I am able to identify and to describe the elements or components of built environment. I have also learnt to analyse and evaluate the different development of the built environment by looking at the natural topography, landscape, space, building and infrastructure as well as initiate ideas on built environment through observation, data collection, evaluation and deliver them by using different media, tools, techniques with my team members 

 

       Besides, I have learnt much about projects for great public spaces which have been done by the others, learning and being inspired by them. It is really a great eye-opener and experience for me to look on how the other architects and designers used their creativity and ideas in the built environment. Moreover, I feel that the idea of public space intervention with the pandemic Covid-19 situation was fun and meaningful. Although it was something new to us, we might need to deal with it one day in future as an architect, seeing the current pandemic situation as a norm.

          In conclusion, I am very grateful that I have exposure to this type of project as it definitely would benefit in the long time, especially for Architecture degree, where we would often do investigations and analysis like these. I really do benefit much from it.
