ENBE Project 2(a)

My "X" Hometown

TASK

My "X" Hometown is an individual assignment.

This project requires us to recall, study and to visually revisit our hometown to visualize the ambience or environment, built components, social and culture through tangible and intangible components. We are then required to created a infographic pamphlet of our hometown.

After having the lecture and discussion on the Built Environment and also the project brief, I started to think of my hometown, Penang Island. Figuring out how I would like to present my hometown in the infographic pamphlet, I named my pamphlet, "My Remarkable Hometown". Then, I continued with the cover page by sketching and painting.

Next, I identified my hometown and narrowed down the areas I would like to talk about in the infographic pamphlet. They are, Penang (key plan) ; Georgetown (location plan) and UNESCO Heritage Area (site plan). I continued with drawing the plans with the aid of Google Earth and Google Map, and also research on the history, landmarks and main accessibility of my hometown as the introduction of the pamphlet.

For the selected area, which was the UNESCO Heritage Area, I described in details about the zoning, building typology and style, road circulation, transportation mode, existing infrastructure and facilities, and public space through the tangible components. Then, I continued elaborating the intangible components in the specific area such as culture, activities and etc. I tried to present the information in a more interesting way by adding visual illustrations like drawings and pictures with simple explanations, hoping that it would be clear and attractive to the readers.

I continued identifying the sentimental part of the area chosen, Chulia Street and discuss about the tangible and intangible elements it contains based on my research and my own experiences. It was the part I enjoyed very much as I felt like sharing my own feelings and my favorite places of my hometown to the others. As a conclusion, I described and justified the improvements I would like to see in my hometown by using the SWOT method which was useful.

REFLECTION

Through this project, I am able to recognize and identify the different elements of the built environment. I also learnt to describe the different characteristics of the built environment by exploring the basic elements such as space, building and infrastructure. Besides, learning to communicate ideas through observation and using different media, tools, techniques to present information.

Meanwhile, I have the chance to look further into my hometown and get to understand different elements of the built environment in Georgetown, such as the zoning, components, building typology and style and many more. I was exposed more about my town's history while doing my research which was an eye opener for me. I also learned how to promote my own city by arranging all information in a pamphlet which was quite challenging for me as I am still in the process of learning information hierarchy.

In conclusion, I've learnt a lot and gained knowledge of my hometown. In my opinion, I have also improved in  presenting information in an infographic and organized manner.
