Assignment 2

My Space

TASK

In this individual assignment, with the knowledge and skills gained from the previous assignment, we are required to produce a set of scaled drawings of our own space in our house by using the basic drawing conventions used in the construction industry. My chosen personal space is my bedroom. A set of drawings: 1 plan view, 2 elevation views,1 section view and a set of detailed furniture drawings with suitable scale of my personal space is drawn by using pens only.

PROGRESS

Week 5

After understanding the assignment brief, we are to select our personal space in our house to draw. My chosen space is my bedroom, with basic measurements and images provided as reference. The overall dimension of my room is 4700mm x 2700mm x 3500mm, which can be fit in the A4 paper by using suitable scale, 1:25. The reason I chose this space is I am familiar the arrangement of the furniture, so it would be much easier to measure and translate the space into drawings.

Week 6

After finalizing my bedroom as my chosen space, I proceeded with measuring the overall dimension of the space and the arrangement of furniture. I also started to draft my floor plan with some dimensions as reference. The suitable scale I have chosen is 1:25, which everything fits well within the title block as well as some details can be shown in the drawings.

I was also practicing my architectural writings for the title block. As I practise more on writing architectural letterings, I am more used to it now as compared to before.

Week 7

Over this week, I have draft 2 simple elevations sketches(horizontal and longitudinal elevations) based on the floor plan finalized previously. The elevation drafts are shown during tutorial classes. After receiving feedbacks from my tutor, I proceed with the final drawings of elevations.

I always keep my tutor updated with my progress to ensure I am always doing in the right way.

Week 8

I continue working on my floor plan and elevation views, meanwhile getting feedbacks from tutors and making necessary amendments in order to produce accurate and correct drawings. Each type of drawings has its own requirements. I also done some research on how to plot the dimensions on the drawings correctly, which the dimension plotting can start with overall length, width then smaller details.

PROGRESS OF FLOOR PLAN AND ELEVATIONS

Next, it would be the section drawing. This part is quite challenging as my house was built in the 60s and there are some difference in the construction method and materials. Thus, I did some extensive research by observing the structure and material of my house as well as doing online research. I also had a discussion with my tutor, Mr Akmal regarding this case and got some extra information and advices on different types of section drawings from him. This really helps me a lot. I was able to explore on different materials and construction.

FEEDBACKS AND DISCUSSION WITH TUROR

Week 9

Moving on, I have to produce a set of detailed drawings of loose furniture found in my space: plan, elevations, sections and one zoom in details. I took pictures and made simple sketches with basic dimensions of my two options, a chair and a floor lamp. The chair is chosen as my finalized loose furniture as it has interesting shape and details, which is more challenging to draw.

I also explore on different suitable scales such as 1:6 and 1:7 to draw the chair in order to be able to show the details of the chair through drawings clearly.

Week 10

All of the drawings required are completed with ink upon submission week. I checked through several times to ensure my drawing are properly done before submission.

REFLECTION

ITD A2 Reflection

This assignment is rewarding and helpful. Throughout the process of completing this assignment, I was able to imply the skills and knowledge gained from the previous assignment as well as getting new inputs of technical drawings in the construction industry. When it comes to using pen instead of pencils, I was quite worried and lack of confidence with it as it was my first approach. In order to produce neat and comprehensive drawings using pen, the line weight of the pigment pen selected and the pressure applied when drawing must be taken into consideration precisely. Of course, practice makes perfect. As I practiced more, I feel more comfortable drawing with pens. Besides, choosing a suitable scale for each drawing is important to ensure all drawings, dimensions and additional information can be fit well into the paper. This is crucial to produce a good drawing. Moreover, I have also been exploring different materials and construction as my house has a different construction method. This gave me a better insights into the real world construction industry and technical drawings. All in all, I was able to have better understandings and improve from mistakes after accomplishing this assignment.
